Anastos, George and Angelica Endowed Scholarship
The George and Angelica Anastos Endowed Scholarship was established at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ in September 2017 by Dr. George Anastos. The scholarship will support undergraduate students demonstrating a strong work ethic and a commitment to the University.
Dr. Anastos earned his bachelor of science degree in biology from Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ in 1942, graduating with distinction and being named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges in 1941. As a UA student, he served as president of Alpha Sigma Omicron Fraternity (now known as Phi Sigma Kappa) and was inducted into several honorary and scholastic societies, including Omicron Delta Kappa, Phi Eta Sigma
Dr. Anastos has enjoyed a distinguished career in higher education and public service. He was named a Guggenheim Fellow in 1958 and previously served as zoology department head at The University of Maryland from 1961-1968. He served as director of the World Health Organization’s Regional Reference Center from 1970-1975 and Secretary General XV International Congress Entomology from 1975-1976. Dr. Anastos previously served as editor of The Journal of Economic Entomology for 14 years.
The George and Angelica Anastos Endowed Scholarship provides scholarship assistance to an undergraduate student demonstrating outstanding personal characteristics, including a strong work ethic, dedication to service and a commitment to campus involvement. The recipient will be an incoming or returning student with a 2.5 overall GPA or higher. Recipient selection will be made by the University of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ’s Office of Student Financial Aid.
